An elite volunteer force drawn from the ranks of the American Airborne divisions, the Pathfinders had the dangerous responsibility of dropping into parachute landing zones up to half an hour before the arrival of the main force, in order to set up a variety of specialist equipment to guide the rest of the aircraft on to the target. Once the main jump was completed, the Pathfinders would join up with the rest of their unit, and
