and certainly it bears a strong resemblance to the iconic folk art lion of John Bell (1800–1880) from the Shenandoah Valley

I believe this wonderfully painted wooden vesta dates to the mid-19th century or so

She looks to me as if in complete control of her realm, and with a hundred plots in motion (I keep thinking of the matriarch on Peaky Blinders!), and this dog her loyal and fiercely protective companion, charged with keeping enemies at bay.
