Japanese Vintage Lacquer Box With Painted Dog and Coasters decorative rug made in 1964I believe the animal depicted on the lid of this beautiful presumed Japanese lacquer box is a Shi shi or Shisa dog a creature resembling a cross between a lion and a dog that derives from Okinawan mythology and is perceived to be a ward protecting from evils. The dog appears to be leaping toward a ball or globe, decorated with gold and silver flowers and flourishes. The box itself, black lacquer with scalloped body, is really lovely, and holds four
