I would guess the wood is ebony

Stable and sound and not very fragile

lid comes off easily and closes tight

I particularly like them opened all the way out and around again so that the knees knock and toes face

patterns fit into a larger geometric order

(With most everything fetching prices way beyond me, I gave up.). But then this little whimsy showed up elsewhere (I guess the buyer bought the lot for something else in it) so I grabbed it.
